Why message consistency decays — and what to do about it

Communication drift is the gradual divergence between what an organization intends to say and what it actually says across channels, teams, and time. It is not the result of bad faith. It is entropy — every individual message is a small choice, and small choices accumulate.
Drift is invisible inside any single artifact. It only appears in comparison: this quarter's language versus last quarter's, marketing's framing versus sales', the playbook versus the actual emails sent. Detection requires either disciplined sampling or, increasingly, automated comparison.
