Writing for Decision Makers

How to write so senior readers can act, not just understand

The skim-then-read pattern

Senior readers triage on first contact. They scan the title, opening sentence, headings, and any bolded text to decide whether to read more carefully. Writing that does not respect this pattern is invisible to them, no matter how thorough.

Frame the choice

Analysis is a means; a choice is the end. Decision-oriented writing names the choice early, defines the relevant criteria, and structures everything else around helping the reader weigh those criteria.

Key takeaways

  • Decision-makers skim first, read second.
  • Frame the choice, not the analysis.
  • Every paragraph should earn the next paragraph.
