Tone Consistency

Definition

The degree to which an organization's communication maintains a coherent tone across pieces, channels, authors, and time periods.

Why it matters

Tone is the most immediately perceptible dimension of brand. Inconsistency in tone signals organizational incoherence even when individual pieces are well executed.

Examples

  • Support replies that match the warmth of marketing copy.
  • Executive updates that maintain a consistent register quarter over quarter.

Best practices

  • Define tone with examples, not adjectives.
  • Apply tone guidance at draft time.
