An executive briefing is not a status update and is not a comprehensive analysis. It is a decision document. Its job is to enable a senior leader to make a decision quickly and with confidence. The defining features are: leading with the decision being requested, presenting options with trade-offs (usually three), surfacing assumptions and risks explicitly, and respecting the reader's time with disciplined brevity. Most executive briefings fail by inversion — building up to a recommendation over many pages, by which point attention is gone. The discipline is to invert the pyramid: the decision request and recommendation lead, the supporting analysis follows for readers who want it.
